Masterclass in ocular oncology

Ocular oncology is a subspeciality of ophthalmology that deals with rare tumours, including cancers of the eye. In this course, you will explore the presentation, diagnosis, and management of intraocular and ocular surface tumours.

Run jointly by the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital, the course with be available from Monday 30 June 2025 and will be hosted on UCL Extend, UCL's learning platform for short courses and professional education.

Course content

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Examination and diagnostic techniques in ocular oncology. There will be a specific focus on ocular ultrasound as the primary diagnostic modality for intraocular tumours.
  • Ocular surface tumours:
    • Squamous cell tumours.
    • Melanocytic and lymphoid lesion.
    • "No touch" tumor surgery and adjuvant treatments.
  • Intraocular tumors in the iris, ciliary body and choroid:
    • Naevus, melanoma, haemangiomas and retinoblastom.
    • Management and differential diagnosis.
    • Systemic management (where relevant).
Teaching and structure

The course content is designed so that you can go through the topics and pre-recorded lectures online at your own pace. There will be a forum for asking questions. The course comprises:

  • 3 hours self-study
  • 7 hours of lectures (pre-recorded)
Certificates and assessment

There will be a multiple-choice quiz with 20 questions at the end of the course.

A certificate of completion will issued on completion of the multiple choice quiz and course feedback form.

Ophthalmologists are eligible for self-certification of CPD points at 1 point/hour in their portfolio.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Use and understand examination and diagnostic techniques in ocular oncology.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of ocular ultrasound and its use in ocular oncology.
  • Understand how to diagnose and manage patients with ocular surface tumours including squamous cell carcinoma of the conjunctiva and conjunctival melanoma.
  • Develop an understanding of benign and malignant conditions that can involve the iris and ciliary body. Understand how these conditions are managed.
  • Develop an understanding of the wide range of tumours that can affect the ocular fundus. These tumours may involve retina, retinal pigment epithelium, vitreous and/or choroid. These tumours can affect patients of any age and a wide variety of management strategies exist for their treatment which the student will learn about.

Professor Mandeep Sagoo

Professor Mandeep Sagoo is a consultant ophthalmologist with clinical practice in the management of adult and paediatric eye tumours at Moorfields Eye Hospital, St. Bartholomew’s Hospital and the Royal London Hospital, Harley Street, London, UK and Portland Hospital. He also holds an academic appointment at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. Professor Sagoo graduated from the MB, PhD programme of Cambridge University, with a PhD in retinal electrophysiology at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge. He underwent Ophthalmology residency training at Oxford and at Moorfields. He trained in Ocular Oncology, as a Fulbright Scholar, under Drs Jerry and Carol Shields at Wills Eye Institute, Philadelphia, USA, and Medical Retina Fellowship at Moorfields, before being appointed to his current position in London in 2008. He has written 5 book chapters and over 35 academic papers, including in the journal Nature. Honours and awards include a Fulbright scholarship to the USA, John Glyn Young Fellows Prize of the Royal Society of Medicine, the Syme Medal of Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Honour Award of Greek Vitreoretinal Society. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a Member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He is an International Member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Member of the European Society of Retina Specialists. He was also elected to membership of the Macula Society, Council Membership of Oxford Ophthalmological Congress and recent election to serve as Honorary Secretary of the International Society of Ocular Oncology.
