Moorfields Eye Hospital are delighted to present Referral refinement for ophthalmic healthcare professionals. The course is primarily targeted at clinicians working in primary or secondary care The is objective of this course is to delve into best practise for different conditions into ophthalmology and empowering clinicians with theoretical and practical knowledge, and a deeper understanding of clinical decision making and when a referral is needed.
This full day, virtual course will deliver a range of lectures from various experts working in secondary and tertiary ophthalmic care including topics like referral criteria, differential diagnoses, appropriate and timely referrals, collaborative care and case-based discussion.
At the end of the course, you will obtain a certificate of participation. CPD points will be available.

Scott Hau is a Consultant Optometrist and Research Optometrist at Moorfields Eye Hospital. He works in numerous external role ophthalmology clinics including A&E, external disease, glaucoma, laser, adnexal/minor ops and medical Retina/uveitis. He has been instrumental in developing various optometry extended-role clinics at Moorfields Eye Hospital and is also the optometry lead for Laser and Independent Prescribing.
Bertil Damato received his undergraduate education in Malta, where he was born, and his postgraduate training in ophthalmology and ocular oncology at the Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology in Glasgow. He is currently Consultant Ocular Oncologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital and Oxford Eye Hospital. In 1993, he established the Liverpool Ocular Oncology Centre, which he directed for 20 years. From 2013 to 2018, he was Professor of Ophthalmology and Radiation Oncology and Director of the Ocular Oncology Service at the University of California, San Francisco and from 2022 to 2024 he was Consultant Ocular Oncologist at St. Eriks Eye Hospital/Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm. Professor Damato has served as President of the European Ocular Oncology Group, the European Vision and Research Association and the International Society of Ocular Oncology. His main research interests relate to ocular oncology, particularly ocular melanoma. He has published more than 340 scientific articles and authored or co-edited several textbooks. Professor Damato has received a number of awards, which include the Bjerrum Medal in Denmark, the Cohen Medal in South Africa, the Watson and Ashton Medals in the UK, the Shields Medal in Hong Kong and the Stallard Medal of the International Society of Ocular Oncology. He is married to Frankanne and has two children, both doctors.
Mr Harry Petrushkin is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields and Great Ormond Street Hospital Specialising in the medical and surgical management of uveitis in adults and children. He studied medicine at Cambridge University and Kings College London. He carried out much of his ophthalmic training in Moorfields Eye Hospital, with Prof Carlos Pavesio and St Thomas’ Hospital with Prof Miles Stanford where he developed his interest in inflammatory eye disease. This led to a PhD, which he carried out at Queen Mary University London, in the Behcet’s Disease Centre of Excellence with Prof Farida Fortune, studying the immunogenetics of Behcet’s Disease. In 2016, Harry travelled to the United States, and spent time at the Francis Proctor Eye Institute, San Francisco, CA with Prof Nisha Acharya; the Casey Eye Institute, Portland, OR with Prof James Rosenbaum and the Massachusetts Eye Research and Surgery Institute, Boston, MA with Prof Steven Foster. Mr Petrushkin has a research interest in ocular tuberculosis, paediatric uveitis and chronic hypotony.
Emma graduated from Cardiff University in 2015 and completed her pre-registration year at Moorfields Eye Hospital. She continued her extended role training at Moorfields and is now a Principal Optometrist. She has a keen interest in contact lenses, paediatrics and research whilst also enjoying working in corneal, glaucoma and cataract clinics. After gaining her independent prescribing qualification, she also completed the Moorfields laser course and now delivers YAG laser capsulotomies in the Cataract Service. She currently works in both adult and paediatric contact lens clinics and is the Lead Optometrist on an ongoing contact lens research project into a new lens design for Keratoconus, led by Mr Dan Ehrlich.
