Orthoptics for ophthalmologists

This blended orthoptic course has been designed by experienced orthoptists at Moorfields Eye Hospital and is suitable for all doctors undertaking the FRCOphth Part 2 exams or for anyone wishing to improve their orthoptic skills.

Course stucture

There are six narrated online lectures on core orthoptics which will be beneficial in helping you to improve your orthoptic testing but also to understand key tests to perform and why these additional tests are needed. These are:

  1. Strabismus top tips
  2. Visual acuity testing 
  3. Interpreting orthoptic reports 
  4. Concomitant strabismus 
  5. Incomitant strabismus 
  6. Hess charts

The lectures will be available from Monday 1st September.

A one-hour Q&A session will be held live online on Wednesday 17th September, from 18:30 - 19:30.

There is an option to attend a session focusing on the practical examination technique and will enable you to perform the cover test, ocular motility, measure an angle of squint and assess visual function in children with communication difficulties on real patients. This session will take place in the orthopics department at Moorfields Eye Hospital on Saturday 11th October. There are a maximum of 16 places available and an additional charge applies (please see details below).

CPD Certifcation

CPD certifcation will be applied for and a CPD certificate will be issued on completion of the course.

Leena Patel

Ms. Leena Patel BMedSci, MSc is a Consultant Orthoptist and Orthoptics Education Lead at Moorfields Eye Hospital and Honorary Teaching Fellow; UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. She was the Co-Director for UK’s first MSc Orthoptics (Pre-registration) course between 2020-2023. Leena delivers lectures and delivers hand on practical teaching at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, Moorfields Eye Hospital and City University. Leena is a volunteer Orthoptist for Orbis Flying Eye Hospital since 2018 and Lifeline Express.
