Observership at Moorfields City Road Hospital

Moorfields Eye Hospital welcomes ophthalmology healthcare professionals from the UK and around the world to observe and learn from our world-leading consultants. Visiting ophthalmologists will have the opportunity to observe Moorfields' consultants in action, examine patients with slit lamps and ophthalmoscopes, and attend surgical operations.

Observerships are usually located in our City Road Hospital but may also be possible at our Bedford and Stratford sites.

Observership duration

Observerships are available for a minimum of one week and a maximum of four weeks. Due to the high level of demand for our observerships, it is not possible to observe for longer than four weeks.

Observership sub-specialities

An observership at Moorfields will be timetabled to include sessions across a range of different services. These include:

  • Adnexal
  • Cataract
  • Cornea and External
  • Electrophysiology
  • Glaucoma
  • Medical Retina
  • Strabismus and Paediatrics
  • Uveitis
  • Vitreo-retinal

If you have an interest in a particular sub-specialty it may be possible to tailor your timetable to optimise the number of sessions with that service.  Please note that an obervership which is tailored around an interest in a particular sub-specialty will still include a number of sessions in other services, due to timetabling constraints. Please discuss your preferences with our team at the point of booking.

Moorfields charges a fee of £500 per week (Monday to Friday) for a clinical observership. An observership comprises at least 8 timetabled sessions (morning or afternoon) per week. Teaching sessions may also be included. The full fee is payable in advance.

Please note that the fee does not include food, accommodation or any other expenses. We cannot provide accomodation for you.
