New to Ophthalmology programme

The New to Ophthalmology programme is a structured induction designed for nurses beginning their careers in ophthalmic nursing. It provides the essential foundation in knowledge, clinical skills, and professional behaviours needed to deliver safe and effective eye care. This programme assists nurses in developing the core competencies necessary for both delivering high-quality patient care and advancing their professional growth.

The programme is offered to nurses joining Moorfields and we are delighted to offer it for the first time to other Trusts.

Course structure

The programme is delivered in two phases:

  • Phase 1 is three days, face-to-face training that introduces key ophthalmic conditions, fundamental clinical skills, scenario-based learning, communication, leadership, and the identification of red flag symptoms. Staff will receive a competency pack to guide their continued learning in clinical practice.
  • Phase 2 is a two-day New to Ophthalmology Bridging Programme, staff attend this programme after a period of 6 months of clinical experience in their own department. This follow-up focuses on slit lamp and tonometry skills and knowledge required for the role, helping staff consolidate their learning and further develop their clinical competence.

This phased approach ensures that new ophthalmic nurses are gradually and effectively prepared for practice, with ongoing support as they transition into their roles.

Aim

To ensure the New to Ophthalmology programme equips staff with the core competencies needed to deliver safe, effective, and high-quality eye care.

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:
