Moorfields international uveitis symposium

Bookings are now open for our international uveitis symposium, taking place in London, 11-13 July 2024.

This is a highly interactive scientific meeting attracting uveitis and retina specialists, key opinion leaders and trainees in clinical practice and scientific research, from both within and outside the uveitis community.

The main objective is to improve knowledge and help clinicians offer the best possible care to their patients. In addition, the meeting aims to provide a forum for the exchange of information and new ideas relevant to clinical practice, investigations, and therapeutic management of patients with ocular inflammatory diseases and complex uveitic conditions, with an in-depth discussion surrounding the diagnosis and therapeutic strategies of specific inflammatory disorders.

Professor Carlos Pavesio, Director of the Scientific Organizing Committee, is responsible for the content of the conference programme. The course is co-organised by Professor Carl Herbort Jr.

National and international speakers will share their knowledge and unique expertise with the audience, aiming at advancing medical knowledge and fostering collaboration worldwide.

This symposium will cover all main areas of interest in the field of uveitis, starting from basic aspects of the clinical presentations and advancing towards developments in diagnosing and treating these conditions.

Carlos Pavesio

Carlos Pavesio is Consultant Ophthalmologist and uveitis specialist at Moorfields Eye Hospital, and Professor of Ocular Inflammation and Infection at UCL. He first joined Moorfields in 1991. He is acknowledged as a world authority in inflammatory eye disease and has over 250 publications. His opinion is sought for difficult cases from ophthalmologists around the world. He has trained numerous generations of uveitis fellows at Moorfields and has editorial positions on international journals. He was Clinical Director of the Medical Retina Service in recent years; he is currently Director of the Uveitis Service, Director of the Fellowship Programme, and Chairman of the Infection Control Committee.

Prof Ahmed Mokhtar Mohamed Abu El-Asrar

Prof Ahmed Mokhtar Mohamed Abu El-Asrar was born and educated in Egypt where he gained a Masters and Doctor degree in Ophthalmology at the University of Mansoura. His professional career in ophthalmology has spanned over 40 years. He has been in his current post of Professor and Consultant in the Department of Ophthalmology, College of Medicine, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia since November 2000. Prof Abu El-Asrar has special interests in vitreo-retinal diseases and surgery, uveitis, and Immunopathogenesis of ocular inflammatory diseases. He is Editor-in-Chief, Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology, Associate Editor, Middle East African Journal of Ophthalmology and Associate Editor, International Ophthalmology as well as being an editorial board member of a number of other publications. Prof Abu El-Asrar is a member of the International Uveitis Study Group as well as many other committees, including the International Council of the International Ocular Inflammation Society and the Research Council & Human Ethics Committee/Institutional Review Board King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital. Prof Abu El-Asrar is the author and co-author of more than 200 papers published in peer-reviewed journals, has research collaboration with international researchers (Belgium, Italy, Spain, Switzerland), is an investigator and co-investigator of research proposals in diabetic retinopathy and is an invited speaker and lecturer of many different national and international meetings, workshops & courses. He is the co-author of Ocular Infections. Series: Essentials in Ophthalmology. Springer 2014. Prof Abu El-Asrar has a number of awards including “Best Research Award”: The Saudi Ophthalmological Society – 1992; 1998; 1999; 2001; 2002; 2018; 2019; 2022.

Professor Marc de Smet

Professor Marc de Smet was born in Canada, where he completed his studies. First a BSc(hon) in Chemistry at the University of Ottawa, followed by medicine at McGill University in Montreal, and Ophthalmology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver under the guidance of Stephen Drance. Followed by 8 years at the NEI in Bethesda MD where he headed the Clinical Immunology Service. Professor de Smet also did a 1 year fellowship at the Wilmer Eye Institute in Vitreo-retinal surgery in Baltimore. Professor de Smet spent 10 years as head of the department of ophthalmology at the University of Amsterdam, where he developed Jetrea, co-developed the first transversal OCT system, and pioneered ocular endoscopy. Professor de Smet has since moved to Lausanne Switzerland where he founded and is director of the center for microinvasive eye surgery (MIOS sa). He is currently professor in Leiden, adjunct professor in Mt Sinai at the NY Eye and Ear Institute, and research associate in the free university in Brussels, Belgium. Professor de Smet has many research interests from basic mechanisms in Uveitis, the treatment both medical and surgical of patients with ocular inflammation and vitreo-retinal diseases, imaging with OCT and autofluorescence. He has also been involved in assessing and developing approaches in vitreo-retinal surgery. Professor de Smet is a member of many professional societies in Uveitis and retina and is on the editorial board of a number of ophthalmic journals and PLOS One. He is the secretary of the International Uveitis Study Group. He has received several awards, the latest being the Machemer lecture award at the SOE in Prague in 2023. He has over 240 publications in peer review journals, 22 book chapters and over 300 invited lectures.

Associate Professor (Dr) Rupesh Agrawal, MD

Associate Professor (Dr) Rupesh Agrawal, MD, is Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist and the Head of Research at the National Healthcare Group Eye Institute. Additionally, he serves as the co-head of the Ocular Infections and Antimicrobials department at the Singapore Eye Research Institute, Associate Professor at both the LKC School of Medicine and Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore and a senior clinical lecturer at National University of Singapore. Dr. Agrawal's journey into the field of ophthalmology began with his medical studies in Nagpur, India. This early passion led him to pursue postgraduate studies and a specialized fellowship in Uveitis and Ocular Trauma at Sankara Netralaya, Chennai, India. Under the guidance of Dr S S Badrinath and some of the foremost experts in the field, he honed his skills and cultivated a deep understanding of ocular diseases. His professional journey took him to various corners of India, he served as a Consultant Ophthalmologist specializing in Uveitis, Ocular Trauma, and Cataract at Shri Ganapati Netralaya in Jalna, India, further enriching his clinical acumen. His professional journey continued with a brief tenure at the renowned L V Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, India under the leadership of Dr G N Rao, before his relocation to Singapore in 2009.

Nicholas Jones FRCP FRCOphth

Nicholas Jones is Honorary Professor of Ophthalmology, University of Manchester, UK and Retired Consultant Ophthalmologist and Clinical Director of Uveitis Service, Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, UK Nicholas underwent his undergraduate training at the Universities of St. Andrews and Manchester, and postgraduate training in ophthalmology at Southampton and Manchester Royal Eye Hospitals. In 1991 he created the Manchester Uveitis Clinic, which has treated over 5,000 patients and has developed an international reputation for quality of care. He is the author of “Uveitis: An Illustrated Manual” which won the Royal Society of Medicine Book Prize in 1999, “Uveitis: Second Edition” in 2012 and “Manchester Royal Eye Hospital 1814-2014: An Inside View”, in addition to numerous book chapters elsewhere and approaching 150 research papers. Professor Jones is a member of the International Uveitis Study Group, emeritus member of the American Uveitis Society, a founder faculty member of the Moorfields and Euretina Uveitis Courses, and is regularly invited to lecture and teach nationally and internationally. He is a long-serving Board Member and Reviewing Editor of the world’s leading uveitis journal, Ocular Immunology & Inflammation.

Dr Ilaria Testi

Ilaria is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital, Uveitis Service, and Great Ormond St Hospital, Paediatric Uveitis Service. She completed her ophthalmic specialist training at University of Padova, Italy, and she trained in Uveitis and Ocular Inflammatory Diseases at Advanced Eye Centre, PGIMER, Chandigarh, India, and Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore. She completed two fellowships in Uveitis at Moorfields Eye Hospital, and she trained in Paediatric Uveitis at Great Ormond Street Hospital. She is currently a MPH degree candidate at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Ilaria currently works as Consultant Ophthalmologist, managing uveitis and inflammatory eye diseases in adults and children. Ilaria is also the Lead of the Uveitis Virtual Service at Moorfields Eye Hospital. She has a strong interest in medical research, and has authored more than 60 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and more than 10 book chapters. Her primary area of research interest includes uveitis and ocular inflammatory diseases.

Colin Chu

Colin Chu is principal investigator at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and supported by the Wellcome Trust as a Clinical Research Career Development Fellow. He undertook his PhD at UCL with Prof Robin Ali and subsequently moved to the University of Bristol as a NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer working with Prof Andrew Dick. He has spent time in the US at the University of Rochester and as a Fulbright scholar at the National Institutes of Health working with Dr Ron Germain on advanced tissue imaging approaches. His ongoing research spans gene therapy and in vivo imaging of immune cells using adaptive optics, OCT and fluorescent dye labelling to better understand ocular inflammation. He is an Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital with his clinical practice in Uveitis. www.colinchulab.com.

Professor Onn Min Kon

Professor Onn Min Kon is Head of Service for Tuberculosis and Respiratory Infection lead at Imperial College London Healthcare NHS Trust. He is also Professor of Respiratory Medicine at Imperial College London. He chairs the UK National MDRTB Clinical Advice Service and ex-chair of the UK Joint Tuberculosis Committee. He is a past president of the British Thoracic Society. He has published over 150 peer reviewed papers and authored several book chapters, editorials and reviews.

Charlotte Frise

Charlotte Frise is a consultant Obstetric Physician and is Lead Obstetric Physician for the NW London Maternal Medicine network. She is a senior college lecturer in Clinical Medicine at Keble College, Oxford. She is co-editor-in-chief of the journal Obstetric Medicine. She has also recently authored two textbooks: Obstetric Medicine, in the Oxford Specialist Handbooks in Obstetrics and Gynaecology series and Case Histories in Obstetric Medicine.

Mr Peter K F Addison

Mr Addison was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon to the Moorfields Medical Retina and Uveitis Services in 2012. He has extensive experience in managing the entire breadth of conditions across these subspecialties. His busy clinical practice is complemented by his active involvement in teaching and research at Moorfields, the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and, through wider networks, both nationally and internationally. Since 2012, he has led a weekly Uveitis and Scleritis clinic with Carlos Pavesio that is one of the most complex and high volume of its kind in the UK, with an emphasis on training UK and international Fellows. He is expert in the use and delivery of intravitreal steroid implants across Medical Retina and Uveitis indications. This has generated an enormous amount of data on outcomes and for use in clinical trials. Through wet lab and injection suite training, he has trained a generation of ophthalmologists and, more recently, nurses to deliver intravitreal steroid implants.

Harry Petrushkin

Mr Harry Petrushkin is a consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields and Great Ormond Street Hospital Specialising in the medical and surgical management of uveitis in adults and children. He studied medicine at Cambridge University and Kings College London. He carried out much of his ophthalmic training in Moorfields Eye Hospital, with Prof Carlos Pavesio and St Thomas’ Hospital with Prof Miles Stanford where he developed his interest in inflammatory eye disease. This led to a PhD, which he carried out at Queen Mary University London, in the Behcet’s Disease Centre of Excellence with Prof Farida Fortune, studying the immunogenetics of Behcet’s Disease. In 2016, Harry travelled to the United States, and spent time at the Francis Proctor Eye Institute, San Francisco, CA with Prof Nisha Acharya; the Casey Eye Institute, Portland, OR with Prof James Rosenbaum and the Massachusetts Eye Research and Surgery Institute, Boston, MA with Prof Steven Foster. Mr Petrushkin has a research interest in ocular tuberculosis, paediatric uveitis and chronic hypotony.

Prof. Ilknur Tugal-Tutkun

Prof. Ilknur Tugal-Tutkun is a consultant at the uveitis service of Istanbul Bayrampaşa Eye Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey. She had served as the Director of the Uveitis Service at the Department of Ophthalmology, Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine between 2007 and 2020. She received an MD from Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1984 and completed a residency in ophthalmology at the same institution in 1991. She completed fellowship training at the Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Service, Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary in 1994-1995. She is a member of the International Ocular Inflammation Society, International Uveitis Study Group, American Uveitis Society, the Society for Ophthalmo-Immunoinfectiology in Europe, and the International Society for Behcet’s Disease. She has published more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals and she is an Editor-in-Chief of the journal Ocular Immunology and Inflammation.

Mr John Brookes

John Brookes is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London since 2004 and an honorary consultant at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. His training involved a fellowship in both adult and paediatric glaucoma at Moorfields in 2003 and he has remained at Moorfields since. Starting in 2022, he has set up the paediatric glaucoma service at the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast, managing children with glaucoma from the whole of Northern Ireland. Primarily a clinician, Mr Brookes now manages paediatric glaucoma full time across the three different Trusts. His interests lie in the surgical management of childhood glaucoma, and he has published his recent outcomes of 360-degree trabeculotomies, as well as the outcomes of tube surgery and laser therapy in children.

Dr Ioannis Papasavvas

Dr Ioannis Papasavvas is an Ophthalmologist working in the Center for Ophthalmic Specialised Care (COS) in Lausanne with special interest in Uveitis-Intraocular inflammation and Retinal diseases. He graduated from Medical School in the University of Ioannina in Greece. Then he started training in General Medicine in the University of Burgundy, Dijon, France. He started his specialty in Ophthalmology at the General Hospital of Patras “St Andreas”, Greece. Dr Papasavvas finished his training in ophthalmology at the Center C of the Montchoisi clinic in Lausanne, Switzerland. He succeeded in the EBO-FMH exam and obtained his FMH title as Specialist in Ophthalmology from the Swiss Board of Medicine and is a Fellow of European Board of Ophthalmology. He completed a Fellowship in Retinal diseases, Uveitis and Intraocular inflammation in COS, Lausanne under Prof Herbort and a Fellowship in Uveitis and Intraocular Inflammation in Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, UK under Prof Pavesio. He has authored more than 40 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and participated as a speaker in many Congresses. Besides working as an Ophthalmologist in COS, he is an Honorary Fellow in Uveitis in Moorfields Eye Hospital and Assistant editor in Journal of Intraocular Inflammation.

Dr. Piergiorgio Neri

Dr. Piergiorgio Neri, BMedSc, MD(Hons), Ph.D., graduated from the University of Ancona Medical School in 2000. He earned a specialist diploma in ophthalmology at the same university in 2004 and completed his Ph.D. in neuroscience in 2007. He has held various academic and clinical positions, including Honorary Research Fellow in Uveitis at the University of Aberdeen, Visiting Professor at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, and the head of the Ocular Immunology Service at the Ospedali Riuniti di Ancona since 2007. In 2010, he became an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Polytechnic University of Marche-Ancona, leaving in 2018 to join the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. At the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Dr. Neri is a medical retina and uveitis consultant, as well as the Director of the Uveitis Service and Executive Medical Director of Patient Experience for the entire clinic. He also holds a Clinical Full Professor of Ophthalmology position at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, where he is also a board member of the Committee of Academic Promotion. Dr. Neri is a prolific author with over 150 national and international publications. He is a member of various ophthalmology societies and holds significant roles within these organizations. Furthermore, Dr. Neri is the Editor in Chief of International Ophthalmology and a Reviewing Editor of Ocular Immunology & Inflammation. He is also a reviewer for several prominent ophthalmology journals.

Dr Lola Solebo

Lola is a Clinician Scientist and Deputy Head of the Population, Policy and Practice department of UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (GOS ICH), and a Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital, where she is also a part of the Uveitis team. Her work investigates the characterisation, and the determinants of outcome for children with treatable eye disorders, and how best to translate those findings into changes in practice and policy. She has led on studies of outcomes following congenital and infantile cataract surgery, and childhood uveitis. Dr Soonita Oomeer

Dr Soonita Oomeer completed GUM & HIV specialist registrar training at St Mary’s Hospital, Central Middlesex Hospital and Northwick Park Hospital in London. She worked as a GUM & HIV consultant at St Ann’s Sexual Health Clinic, Haringey and Marlborough GUM clinic at the Royal Free Hospital in London. She works for Central North West London NHS Trust (CNWL) Sexual Health services as an integrated sexual health consultant at Archway Sexual Health Centre and Edgware Community Hospital Sexual Health Clinic. She is clinical lead for CNWL Sexual Health services in Barnet. She is a member of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) Bacterial Special Interest Group. She leads on syphilis within her service and has created local referral and management pathways with ENT, ocular and antenatal services in North Central London to optimise care for these complex patients.
