Ophthalmic technicians introduction course (OVS3)
This virtual self-paced course has been designed for fast-tracking entry level ophthalmic technicians with little or no experience into an ophthalmic setting. It will allow the individual taking the course to assist with a variety of tasks that require a basic knowledge of medical terminology, ocular anatomy and physiology, knowledge of eye diseases and patient care prior to engaging in practical based on-the-job skills.
Course Overview
The eLearning course contains thirteen modules and has been specifically designed to take individuals with no experience in ophthalmology or ophthalmic clinical practice to a level that they can productively join a non-medical professional ophthalmic team.
The thirteen course modules are:
- Fundamental professional principles
- The ophthalmic patient
- Overview of anatomy and physiology of the eye
- Common eye conditions
- History taking
- Visual assessment
- Basic observations
- Setting up the clinic
- Instillation of dilating eye drops
- Ophthalmic clinical investigations
- Glossary, further knowledge & support
- Practical training and final assessment
- Introduction to care certificate
For most people the course will take around 7 hours to complete.
Once staff have completed the modules, organisations may opt to supplement the eLearning with face-to-face clinical training with industry partners. Minimum staff numbers apply and there may be an associated cost. For more details about this option please email moorfields.courses@nhs.net.
Who should apply
This course is ideal for motivated individuals wishing to enter the ophthalmic workforce – either through NHS, Optometry Services, Private Ophthalmology providers, or an employer looking to train up new or existing staff to fill emerging gaps in the workforce to provide ophthalmic care.
Accreditation
A certificate of completion will be awarded at the end of the course.
