Advanced spectacle dispensing course
This brand new course is aimed at dispensing opticians, who are looking to upskill and improve their knowledge and practical skills in complex, advanced dispensing.
Moorfields Eye Hospital has the largest dispensing practice nationally within the NHS hospital eye service. Our expert team, would like to share their knowledge with fellow registered dispensing opticians, in both primary and secondary care settings, to ensure the best care for patients.
Learning outcomes
This course will cover a wide range of topics from trouble shooting visual issues to paediatric dispensing and dispensing for special facial characteristics. Including:
- Clinical practice
- Analyse paediatric prescriptions to identity key dispensing considerations.
- Measure children accurately to ensure frame fit and lens positioning.
- Select suitable lens materials and coatings to maximise safety and vision.
- Apply correct facial measurement techniques to achieve accurate, consistent dispensing outcomes.
- Perform accurate measurements and adapt techniques for different ages, ethnicities, and unique facial characteristics.
- Apply age-appropriate fitting and measurement techniques based on how children’s facial features change as they grow.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the implications of this for accurate frame fitting.
- Communication
- Communicate effectively with children and parents to support compliance and care.
- Be aware of current good practice with regards to children and young people with learning disabilities.
- You'll be aware of their legal obligations, and communication challenges, when dispensing children.
- Professionalism
- You'll be able to recognise issues around access to myopia management and the potential for inclusive service provision within evolving NHS pathways.
- How to consider and respond to the needs of children and adults with learning disabilities and make reasonable adjustments to their practice.
- Practitioners will appraise their own record-keeping practices against GOC standards and recommend improvements to ensure honesty, accountability, and professional integrity in clinical documentation.
- Leadership and accountability
- Better understanding of the challenges of providing care in a special school or other community setting to ensure that the environment is safe and appropriate for the delivery of care to patients with learning disabilities.
- You'll be able to ensure that the supervision of paediatric dispensing is undertaken appropriately and complies with the Opticians Act 1989.
- You'll be able to evaluate the quality of clinical records by examining sample case notes and identify the elements required for accurate and comprehensive documentation.
Course structure
You can join us in-person or online.
Those attending in-person will be able to join a peer review session including case records and a practical workshop in addition to the lectures.
Those attending online will not be able to participate live in the peer review and practical sessions, but will be provided with supporting materials for these sessions.
